Reading Nook Hunters

Hey guys!

Welcome to Reading Nook Hunters, the book nerd version of House Hunters!

HGTV-showchip-house-hunters

Hope you’re having a great summer and finishing it off with a great book! I just finished Life of Pi by Yann Martel and I really enjoyed it.

Creating the perfect environment for reading can really enhance the experience. Here are some images I found all over the interweb that I feel capture exactly the places I would like to be reading in!

Here are my reading nook demands:

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time

✓ Well Lit

NOOK #1

The Cupboard Under the Stairs Nook

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time

✓ Well Lit

First things first, to satisfy the Harry Potter nerd that I am, I have to freak out about this cozy spot. It takes a cupboard under the stairs and turns it into a space that I would die for. The bookshelves and the little reading ledge make this a must have for when I get a house. Also look how many pillows there are; I feel like I’d probably sleep here even if I had a bed because it’s so cool. There’s also a light right above where your book would be, how genius?

The Sofa

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time

✓ Well Lit

On this page, the second sofa (the grey one) is a place I’d love to read after I’ve come home from school, or on a cold day with a mug of hot chocolate under that soft blanket. Maybe I can replace one of those pillows with my cat? That would make it even more perfect. To satisfy my need to be around books, I’d put in this incredible bookshelf called the XANDER BOOKCASE (YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT) right across the way. IT’S PERFECT AND IT HAS MY NAME. WHAT.

NOOK #3

The Igloo

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time (hopefully)

❌ Well Lit

When I found this picture I am pretty sure I gasped. If you threw some pillows and blankets in there imagine how cozy it would be! I’ve never thought of building a book igloo before, but now I think it’s gotta happen. The only thing I worry about here is the books falling over *shudders* but it looks pretty structurally sound.

NOOK #4

The Book Cave

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time (again, hopefully)

❌ Well Lit

Okay, I know I’ve said the word cozy at least 3 times by now but I think this is possibly the coziest. It looks so warm and inviting, and reminds me of a second-hand bookstore with the piled up books. I wouldn’t want to leave this little place! It really encompasses the meaning of reading nook. Again I’m worried about the books falling over if I try to take one out, but hey, maybe I put the books I’ve read as the walls?

NOOK #5

The Spacious Windowseat Nook

✓ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

✓ Stands the test of time

✓ Well Lit

The last indoor spot that I am extremely jealous of is incredible; I love that I can choose to look out the window and see the greenery or turn around and stare at my bookshelves! I love to be surrounded by my books and have natural light; it gives the room the perfect atmosphere. There’s enough shelf space here for me not to have to double stack my books and a comfy windowseat perfect for diving into a book.

Now for two outdoor ideas!

NOOK #6

The Tree Nook

❌ Surrounded by books

❌ Comfy

❌ Stands the test of time

✓ Well Lit

This one looks great; but I can’t see myself sitting here for hours because it doesn’t look too comfortable. It also only achieves two goals on my list of requirements. But, I like that the tree has a little cradle spot and it is in the middle of a lot of green.

NOOK #7

The Pool Doughnut

❌ Surrounded by books

✓ Comfy

❌ Stands the test of time (seasonal)

✓ Well Lit

This is a simple but very peaceful reading place. Not necessarily a nook, but the ululations of the water and floating with a book just sound incredible. Sadly, this would only be an option for summer and it is not surrounded by books.

The Hanging Nook

This is a lovely looking pillow-filled floating chair that I would love to have in my backyard! I can see myself in this reading a book while the sun is setting on a weekend. Partner this with a fireplace and some marshmallows, you’ve got a perfect evening.

Deliberation Time

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Welcome back to Reading Nook Hunters! After lots of deliberating, I narrowed the 9 nooks down to the three that met all my demands. Here they are:

Nook #1 is wonderful; it’s the perfect place for a Potterhead but it lacks in shelf space and I think I’d hit my head on the stairs.

Nook #2 is a great big space that looks comfortable, and has a bookshelf named Xander. As cool as the bookshelf is, it wouldn’t be able to fit all my books and it’s not necessarily just a reading room, it’s a living room.

Nook #3 has huge, expansive shelves and and a beautiful view. It’s a dedicated reading room, but it’s not as warm and cozy as some of the other options.

Decision Time

AND THE WINNER IS….

COMMERCIAL BREAK

THE SPACIOUS WINDOWSEAT NOOK!

This is the closest picture I found to what I was thinking of in my head. I absolutely love everything about it and would be the happiest reader sandwiched between my two bookshelves.

Well, those are all my dream reading nooks and I would happily take any of them. I’ll probably look back at this when I’m rich and famous and build one of them but until then I’ll have to just dream. Maybe if I’m not rich and famous when I grow up I’ll end up on this:

Which, hey, wouldn’t be bad, but that would mean I’d have a mini library’s worth of books and I would rather have them read by others than lie down on them! And one last one for fun is a place I would DEFINITELY NOT like to be reading. That makes me nervous just looking at it. GAH.

  1. I’d really like an enclosed area as a reading nook, like a pillow fort, but more comfortable and more permanent.
