1.    Where did the idea for The Briny Deep Mysteries come from?

A few years ago I was sitting out in my backyard with my son, Timmy. It was a clear night and all the stars were shining so brightly. In Florida when the stars come out it’s amazing, they seem to go on forever. My son and I began to talk about an idea I had for a book. I wanted his teenage opinion on it. Before we knew it several hours had passed and we had come up with some amazing stories about a place called Briny Deep.

2.    When did you start working on this series?

It took me about two years to finally decide to write this story. I was already a writer. I had written seven celebrity biographies on people like Paris Hilton and Mary J. Blige. I also was a newspaper reporter and freelance writer for more than 15 years. But it was leaving my job as a freelance writer to work at another job in marketing that really inspired me to finally write my own story. I really hated my new job! My boss was mean and the office was dreary – and one day I said to myself – I have to make my own dreams comes true because life is too short to be at a job that makes you unhappy. I thought about it – and realized that what makes me happy is writing stories about fantastical places with mystery, suspense and adventure. So I began writing The Briny Deep Mysteries that day – and six months later I found a publisher who loved the idea and offered me a book contact – for not one – but three books. Oh – and I left that horrible job!

3.    Which do you prefer: Hardcover or Paperback?

That’s a good question. I want to say hardcover because they feel nice to hold. But since I live right by the beach and do a lot of reading there, paperbacks usually work out better for me. They are lighter, less expensive and if you get them a little wet, they dry out fast.

4.    How often do you write?

I try to write every day, but I have a ten-year-old and two teenagers at home and they are a little loud sometimes. My favorite time to write is early in the morning – when it’s still dark outside and everyone is asleep. If I can get up two hours earlier than everyone else, it’s prime writing time for me. I also love to write when it’s rainy or stormy outside.

5.    Where do you get inspiration from?

Ideas for stories have always come easy for me. I have a very vivid imagination and anything can inspire an idea for a book. It could be a dream, a song, a rainy day, a walk on the beach, or a person I see at the store.

6.    Which authors do you get ideas from?

I’ve always loved to read and I absolutely love mysteries, so I would have to say that I got my vibrant imagination from the books I read when I was younger. Some of my favorite stories were; A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg, and Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. I really like stories about places with secret passageways, hidden rooms, and magical lands. My favorite author – and the one I get the best ideas from – is my husband, John Torres. He has written over 50 books and we really provide a lot of support and encouragement for each other to go after our writing dreams.
